5Inspiring story
By J. Prather
I was very happy to see this book. The story of Michael Vick’s dogs and their recovery, so ably chronicled in Jim Gorant’s The Lost Dogs has been brought to a format effortlessly accessible to young children. The story of Audie is a outstanding one to illustrate the miracle that occurred when a bunch of committed volunteers decisive that a group of dogs that had never known love or caring were worth saving. This author does an awful occupation of telling this story in words meant not to traumatize young dog lovers, but to inspire and offer hope.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and no young reader will look at the photo of a young dog cowering versus a cement building or peering fearfully out of a cage without realizing the depth of the harm done to these dogs. They will also be competent to find joy and smiles in the photos of Audie sitting next to his eternally owner and playfully interacting with the other dogs from the Vick kennels. Much like in Gorant’s book for adults, little attention is paid to Vick and his crimes, but much attention is paid to the dogs and the persons who care for them.

For older readers, a timeline of the Vick case is included to offer up the basic facts and the reader is encouraged to visit the dog’s blog. There is an info page for more info when it comes to pit bulls, and a suggestion for further reading section to direct readers to more selective information not only in regards to pit bulls, but also with regards to puppy training and the Canine Good Citizen program. This is an magnificent choice for young dog lovers grade 2 and up. The reading level is easy, and the text is simple and direct. Recommended.

5A must read for all huge kids
By Chloe
This is a extraordinary book for children and parents alike. It demonstrates perfectly, and with fantasti big and touching photos, what happens for little dogs who are forced to fight and how resilient they may be when they’re given a second chance. This book has heady subject matter for children, but they perceive intuitively, that dogs like Audie are victims of abuse, not innately aggressive beasts. They’re that noble of all species: dogs. And they show us that as we follow their traveling to their new happy, safe and loving lives.
