It goes without saying that running a progressed football club these days costs a lot of money. To be capable to keep a team competitory means paying ever higher wages for players, coaches and other supporting staff. It is for this reason that revenue is critical in the running of a football club. An primary contributor to a steady stream of revenue is having a wealthy financial backing in the form of sponsorship, especial shirt sponsorship. The Premier League alone boasts £100m worth of Shirt Sponsorships for the 2010-11 season, seeing an increase of £28.11m from 2009-10. This season there are a record five teams which have signed new deals with a new sponsor; Topping the revenue charts are Liverpool and Manchester United who both have signed new deals of £20m per year. Liverpool ended their 18 year affiliation with Carlsberg after agreeing a new deal with Standard Chartered Bank whilst Manchester United consorted a deal with AON, after they terminated their deal with AIG. Liverpool’s deal with Standard Chartered will see them profiting an extra £12.55m per season when equated with their former deal with Carlsberg. Aston Villa and Fulham both agree a new deal with Forex trading. Aston Villa consorted a deal with FxPro after having their shirt sponsorship given to charity establishment Acorns for the duration of former seasons. The new deal with FxPro will see them earn £5m per year. Fulham also signed a deal with Forex Trading seeing them earning around £1m more than their former deal with LG. Blackpool, which is at the bottom of the list when it comes to sponsorship revenue have also signed a new deal with Wonga worth just half a million. This notwithstanding still represents an increase of £300,000 from their deal with Carbrini last season. Some teams in the premier league this year notwithstanding will not see a alter in the sponsors you will see on their shirts and in a heap of cases such as Newcastle United and Sunderland they have actually seen a decline in revenue stream from their sponsors. Newcastle’s deal with Northern Rock fell from £4.8m to £2.5m whilst Sunderland accorded a deal with Tombola which will earn them £1.5m less than the former season. |
